21_Felt tip spinning top

29 May

This week I went back to my childhood and remembered this really cool toy my sister and I used to play with. So today, here´s how to make your own felt tip spinning top.

It will take you about 30 minutes to make

You`ll need:

_To download and print this file: spinning top

_A piece of A4 card. (You could recycle a cereal box)

_Short felt tip pens, about 8cm long

_Ruler, cutter or Exacto knife and a surface to cut on

_UHU glue

_Paper to spin-draw on

How to make:

1. Download and print the file above. If your printer takes card, you can print directly on it; otherwise, print on a regular piece of paper and stick it on the card.

2. Cut the pieces from the drawing over the black lines. The red dotted lines indicate where you should pass the cutter a couple times but not cut all the way through.

3. Fold the sides of the cone and tabs over the dotted lines. Use the UHU glue to stick the cone together and then stick it on the circle. The purple line indicates where to stick it.

4. Insert one of your felt tip pens into both holes of the shape you just made. Make sure the tip comes out through the flat circle as in the image below.

5. You’re ready to spin-draw! (put the tip of the pen on a piece of paper, hold it from the top and make it spin)

TIP: the felt tip spinning top works better when the base of the cardboard piece is closer to the tip of the pen.

Change the colour for any you want and spin-draw for as long as you like.
